A book with the title “Plurilinguisme et Formation des Enseignants: une approche critique. Plurilingualism and Teacher Education: A Critical Approach” has recently been published.

The co-editors are Associate Pr. Sabine Ehrhart and Adam Le Nevez from the University of Luxembourg (FLSHASE) and Christine Hélot from the University of Strasbourg.

The new publication is part of the Peter Lang MSU Collection “Mehrsprachigkeit in Schule und Unterricht” and includes chapters in English and French.

“Plurilingualism and Teacher Education” addresses the key issues of bilingual learning and teaching, language ideologies and linguistic diversity in teacher education. It explores the diverse contexts within which this education takes place, and the challenges facing teachers in responding to this diversity, from critical and socially engaged perspectives.

Ofelia García says in the introduction: The major contribution of this book is not what it says about teacher education, but what it says about plurilingualism in education. Many educators agree that teacher education has to be revamped in order to put the diversity of the children at the center, but few have a vision of what to do with these understandings. (…) What is innovative about this approach in teacher education is that the editors of this volume, and the authors that have contributed to it, are not simply talking about preparing teachers to develop their students’ bilingualism. The editors and contributors to this volume make clear that the ultimate goal is not solely bilingualism, but equity.”
