The conference will focus on the working poor in rich economies. Professor Marx will discuss the debates and concerns that have given rise to an increased awareness on this issue, both in the academic literature and in the wide societal debate. He will start with a discussion of definitional and measurement issues. He will then discuss levels and trends across rich countries with a principal focus on Europe. He will show how different institutional and policy constellations across countries are associated with varieties of in-work poverty. He will conclude with some considerations for policy makers.
